Two people have been bust trying to leave the country with R6.7 million of undeclared currency!
According to News24, customs officials at the OR Tambo International Airport in Ekurhuleni intercepted two passengers on Thursday (25 January) on their way to Dubai.
As they were about to board their flight, their luggage was inspected.
It was discovered that a lot of brown envelopes filled with a total of US$ 568 480 were stashed in between their clothes.
The passengers were arrested and a criminal case has been opened.
In a statement, SARS acting spokesman Sicelo Mkosi is quoted as saying that the interception was part of “ongoing, wider investigations into a syndicate.”
Further details about the passengers could not be revealed as the case was very sensitive, he said.
