POLICE and the department of correctional services are hunting for a prisoner who escaped from Ermelo Correctional Services in Mpumalanga last Wednesday.
Solomon Shabangu (31) was last seen working in the agricultural section of the centre.
“We are appealing to the public to assist with any information that could lead to the rearrest of the escapee,” said Tshidi Mapole.
Shabangu was convicted for robbery and was sentenced to eight years in prison.
Mapole said Shabangu didn’t seem like a dangerous prisoner as he was complying with rules like any other inmate at the prison.
She said they realised when they counted offenders that he was not there and said there was no sign of a vandalised wall or a cut fence. Preliminary investigations are underway to find out how he escaped.
The public is advised to contact the nearest police station or alternatively call 10111, but not to attempt a citizen’s arrest.
