The DA is deeply saddened by the loss of life during the recent heavy storms which ravaged many parts of KZN.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to those who have lost loved ones and wish a speedy recovery to those who have been hospitalized.

We are encouraged by the heroic efforts of the KZN Disaster Management Agency personnel who are assisting communities in the affected areas.

DA public representatives are working tirelessly across the city to ensure that residents are assisted by emergency services and are able to rebuild their lives.

Media reports indicate that at least 23 people have been killed as a result of mudslides and collapsing buildings. It is sad to note that emergency reports are pointing to a possible rise in the death toll.

Even as KZN’s Disaster Management Agency continues to offer assistance to affected communities, it remains shockingly under-funded. A total of R64 917 million has been allocated for 2019/20 despite an expenditure of R76 234 million in 2018. It is clear that the allocation is insufficient and the DA will be motivating for increased funding in the province during the new parliamentary term.

The DA remains committed to assisting the people of KZN during this time of need and will do everything in our power to offer any assistance needed.
